Civic center hosting health conference next month

The Northeast Georgia Nutrition Education Coalition will sponsor "Go Local: Eat, Work and Play," a health and wellness conference, at the Oconee County Civic Center on Feb. 16.

Early registration with a $30 admission and $15 student admission ends Jan. 15, while late rate fees of $40 and $25, respectively, apply from Jan. 16 through Feb. 1.

The daylong conference begins with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and features seven speakers, including well-known talk show host Walter Reeves and Athens chef Peter Dale.

Reeves, retired from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service where he worked for 29 years, grew up on a poultry farm in rural Fayette County, caring for the hens and a vegetable garden. His grandmother "Bubber" raised flowers in two gardens beside the family home and taught Walter the simple pleasures of puttering around with plants.

Reeves hosts a radio call-in show on NewsTalk 750 WSB-AM. He also writes a column for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Living section and has hosted "Gardening in Georgia" on Georgia Public Broadcasting since 1999.

Dale, a native Athenian and graduate of the University of Georgia, once worked as a congressional legislative aid in Washington, D.C. The city's dining and multitude of ethnic restaurants eventually led him to a career outside politics. He returned to Athens to work under chef Hugh Acheson of Five & Ten. Six years later, Dale and Acheson, along with partner Chris Luken, opened The National in downtown Athens.

Dale serves as chef at The National, and the menu reflects his interest in Mediterranean cuisine while incorporating local products as often as possible. In particular, he's interested in the food culture of Spain and has had the opportunity to spend time in the kitchens of LaBroche in Madrid and La Lobera de Martin in Zaragoza.

This coming spring, Dale and Acheson will open their first restaurant in Atlanta, Empire State South. The restaurant will be a modern interpretation of the classic Southern meat-and-three.

Here are some of the other conference speakers:

► Becky Drayton, a graduate of James Madison University, pursued a master's degree in public health from the University of Georgia. After graduating, she became a health educator at Athens Regional Medical Center and has been there about four years. She will speak on stress management, tobacco cessation, weight management and staying active.

► Midge Leventry graduated with a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition from Cornell University and completed her dietetic Internship at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She worked as a registered dietitian at Cornell and in hospitals in California and Indiana. For more than 10 years, she was a nutrition instructor at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill. She and her husband, Bob, joined the Peace Corps in 1993 and served in Ecuador. They founded the company Inca Organics i
